Microsoft says the Govern experience in the OneLake catalog is now generally available, giving Fabric admins a central place to manage governance across tenants, domains, capacities, workspaces, tags and policies. Govern Skills are also available in the Skills for Fabric collection, so AI agents can help audit, investigate and recommend remediation for governance issues. Both were announced at FabCon Europe 2026.
The release is aimed at Fabric administrators and data owners who need to keep track of growing estates without moving between separate admin settings, reports and management pages. It also gives agents a defined governance operating model, rather than leaving them to infer how to use Fabric admin APIs for each task.
Govern tab in the OneLake catalog
The Govern tab provides two main views. All data in Fabric gives a tenant view for assessing the health of the estate and identifying where to act first, while My items gives owners a view of governance issues for items they can update.
From either view, View more opens the full insights report. The report shows governance trends and where gaps are concentrated, including areas such as endorsements and Sensitivity label coverage.
The same experience also brings several management areas into the catalog. Domain management covers business-oriented organisation, domain ownership and delegated responsibility. Capacity and workspace pages show all capacities and workspaces in the tenant.
Policies Center remains in preview. It can configure, activate and monitor governance policies across tenants, capacities, domains and workspaces, including attribute-based controls such as allowing only a data engineering security group to create Dataflow Gen2 items in approved workspaces. Tags can also be viewed, managed or defined for the organisation.
Reports for admins and owners
The insights behind the catalog view are also available as a report in the Admin monitoring workspace. Every Fabric administrator can access it, and its semantic model is intended for customisation, including additional reports, alerts, dimensions or longer retention.
Microsoft says the report is available to all tenants regardless of licence or size. Admins can share it with others, and data owners get their own version of the report in My workspace.
Govern Skills for agents
Govern Skills are AI skills in Skills for Fabric. They let users ask governance questions, investigate issues and receive remediation guidance through an AI agent, including GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio Code.
The skills follow the governance pillars used in the OneLake catalog. Health covers inventory, governance health, empty domains, unassigned workspaces, inactive or unused items, and missing governance metadata. It can also use Fabric admin APIs for actions such as bulk workspace-to-domain assignment and domain admin management.
Protect checks Sensitivity label coverage and domain default labels. Trust checks description, tag and endorsement coverage, and identifies which items should be curated first. The initial coverage is broadest in Health.
Each skill follows the same workflow: audit, explain, recommend and remediate. Responses include the finding, supporting evidence, impact, priority and recommended action. If a signal cannot be measured, the skill identifies the limitation and directs the user to the Govern tab or Microsoft Purview for review.
The skills include guardrails around agent action. They use supported Fabric admin APIs, surface uncertainty, and request confirmation before sensitive or destructive changes. Microsoft recommends reviewing proposed changes before confirming them, especially for bulk actions.
Admin workflow
A typical health check starts with installing Fabric Skills for GitHub Copilot CLI or another compatible AI coding tool. The admin can then ask the agent to run a governance health check for the tenant.
The agent inventories the tenant and highlights issues such as empty domains, workspaces not assigned to a domain and inactive items. It presents evidence, impact and priority for each finding, then proposes actions such as assigning unassigned workspaces to the correct domain in bulk.
After a confirmed change, the admin can return to the Govern tab in the OneLake catalog to track governance posture over time. Microsoft says future work will expand Protect and Trust scenarios, add remediation capabilities and integrate governance further into Fabric AI experiences, but it has not provided a timeline.
Assigning Fabric workspaces to domains, tracking sensitivity labels and using agents to remediate governance gaps are questions for ECS's Data topic, alongside Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, SQL Server and Dataverse. The programme gives attendees sessions and practitioner discussions on how Fabric governance works in live tenants, including the trade-offs around administration and ownership. Bring the Fabric estate questions that are hard to settle from product screens alone.
